WHAT IS A LAUGHTER CLUB, ANYWAY?

On morning of March 13th, 1995, Dr. Madan Kataria, gathered five folks together in a corner of a beautiful park in Mumbai, India.  He motivated them to start laughing, by explaining the health benefits.  The group started growing, mostly men, aged forty plus, as well as some women and children.

Initially, they told jokes to each other to ‘inspire’ the laughter, but they ran out of material!  “It was evident that it we wanted to laugh every day we could not depend on someone telling jokes 365 days a year.  Jokes were banned and it was decided that the club members would laugh without them.” (Laugh For No Reason, Dr. Madan Kataria, Madhuri international, 1999).  Dr. Kataria developed a new technique of group laughter based on yoga.  A Laughter Club session consists of deep breathing, stretching, ‘laughters’, such as the Indian greeting laughter, the Arm Swing laughter, the Cocktail Party laughter, the Lion, etc., and ideas for Good Hearted Living.

Now, seven years later, there are over a thousand Laughter Clubs in India and several hundred here in the United States, as a result of The World Laughter Tour (Think Globally.  Laugh Locally).  The World Laughter Tour trains folks, from all over the country, to become Certified Laughter Leaders.  The groups are non-political, non-religious, and non-exploitive.  And LOTS of fun!  To learn more about Laughter Clubs, visit www.worldlaughtertour.com.

HEALTH AND HAPPINESS THROUGH LAUGHTER

AND GOOD-HEARTED LIVING

“Laughter in Laughter Clubs in not meant to be only outer laughter or physical exercise, but also inner laughter, that is, developing the spirit of laughter by being happy and making others happy.  It is a joint effort to search for different formulas for stress-free living.”
